Abstract

This study assesses fish harvesting methods among fisher folks in Cross River State. The objective of the study was to; assess the distribution of respondents based on socio-economic characteristics, identify the methods of fish harvesting used by fisher folks in Cross River State, examine the effects of fish harvesting methods on fish productivity in the study area, and ascertain the perceived effects of fish harvesting methods on the health status of fisher folks. The population of the study comprised of the fisherfolks in the coastal communities in Cross River State. The study adopted multi-stage sampling technique with sample size of 165 respondents. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that majority of the harvesters (70.9%) were male. Hook and line (94%), gill net (90%), among others were the frequently used methods of fish harvesting in the area. It concluded that, a good understanding of harvesting methods and the utilization of best practices in fish harvesting will enhance farmer’s safety and improve his health, and recommended the department of aquaculture in the state Ministry of Agriculture to leverage on the high level of experience of fish harvester for micro enterprise expansion.
