Linkage mechanisms for climate change adaptation among actors of yam and cassava innovation system, Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract
This paper examined the linkage mechanisms for climate change adaptation among actors of yam and cassava innovation system in Cross River State, Nigeria. Specifically, it identified the type and strength of linkage mechanisms that exist among the stakeholders. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 270 out of a population of 4,508 to constitute the sample size. As regards the type of linkage mechanisms with collaborating organizations, results of the study revealed that majority (67%) of yam and cassava farmers considered the type of linkage with farmers’ groups to beinformation sharing in nature. Most (72.4%) of the staff of State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (SMANR) considered the type of linkage with Cross River Agricultural Development Programme (CRADP) to be a partnership type, majority (66.7%) of the lecturers considered the linkage mechanism type with staff of other universities to be research networks, and most (95%) of the staff of CRADP indicated that the dominant type of linkage mechanism between the organization and farmers’ groups is information sharing networks. With respect to the strength of linkage among collaborating organizations, the study showed that strong linkages exist between SMANR and CRADP (3.21), lecturers and universities (3.0), and between CRADP and farmers’ groups (4.05). All other linkages with collaborating organizations were found to be weak. The study therefore recommended that collaboration among all actors should be strengthened.
